Confessions of Faith (Apostles' Creed, Nicene Creed, etc. and many scriptural creeds, The Ten Commandments, as an example) are those wonderfully worded distillations of a lot of pages of scripture and a lot of history of God's people. They don't take the place of the whole Bible, but they do remind us of the bullet points, the high points, the main points we dare not forget.
Paul, our pastor, has been reminding us of some of the history of the more common creeds or Confessions of Faith that we often say together in worship. It is really cool to bring us back to the essentials and to connect us in some way to Christians of long ago, and right now around the world, for that matter.
Another Confession of Faith that we say as we live our lives today is...our very lives. Our lives "confess our faith" or they deny our faith. What confession have you made today by the thoughts you think, by the words you say or the way you say them? Is your life making a "good confession" today?
I welcome any comments on Confessions of Faith.
Blessings,
George Searcy

I know what you mean about feeling connected to Christ's Church through time and space with the confessions...
ReplyDeleteI distinctly remember being completely blown away by the the Westminster Confession. When it was introduced to me my head swam from the thrill of my heart's cry. I knew my faith was very specific and filled with content that I needed to know to be able to know God and to please Him.
That it had been pounded out and written down as a guide and encouragement to me was unspeakably wonderful. I knew in that moment the scene the author of Hebrews paints for us in chapters 11 and 12. It was a moment of eternity breaking into my personal time and space and joining me to all that is Christ's.
I still carry a sense of that connectedness today, and I was stirred and reassured that we were called together to pray for Bill Carrigan and family. Our Lord confesses that his house shall be a house of
prayer. I do believe it brings us into Christ together and in one accord knowing our Lord reigns. Worship raises us together. It is the only thing I know that does.
Blessings,

George! My comment is thank you for all that you (and your whole family) provide to push us toward rich worship at ESPC.
